Shaklee Philosophy - 'in harmony with nature'

With Shaklee's philosophy of living "in harmony with nature" comes responsibility to sustain the earth for future generations, preserving it for the multitude of species who are depending on us to be responsible stewards of the earth.

At Shaklee, living "in harmony with nature" is more than a slogan. It began with Dr. Shaklee's belief that the health of the planet is intertwined with the health of every person who inhabits it. And today, more than ever, Dr. Shaklee's philosophy is part of everything we do. From Shaklee's corporate logo that symbolizes the harmony of sky and earth to our gently-on-the-earth products, environmentally sound packaging and the allocation of corporate resources to environmental causes, Shaklee continues the dream of living in harmony with nature.

Many people are seeking to lead environmentally sound lives. They are educating themselves about the threat of environmental pollution and those waste products that remain after people perform ordinary tasks, such as cleaning their homes or washing clothes and dishes. Many people are turning to Shaklee as a way to make a difference to the environment.

People see that using Shaklee household products is something that individuals can do to help the environment. And as membership in environmental groups swell, so do the number of Shaklee businesses. People are eager to be associated with a company that takes the environment seriously.

Global warming, toxic waste, contaminated ground water and holes in the ozone layer all cause the public to demand some serious changes. And businesses are scrambling to paint themselves "Green".

Since its inception 51 years ago, Shaklee has never had to change any of its practices to be environmentally friendly company. Companies are discontinuing the use of aerosol sprays. Shaklee has never had aerosol pumps on its products. Other companies are removing phosphates from their products. But there have never been any phosphates to remove from Shaklee cleaning products.

Consequently, Shaklee was named as one of only seven official corporate sponsors of Earth Day 1990 and Basic-H was named the official Earth Day cleaning product.

Shaklee's Environmental Wellness program focuses on three important issues:education - making people aware of the problems that exist in our environment today; personal responsibility - deciding that we can to something as individuals in our homes, our neighborhoods and in our communities to help live in harmony with Nature; and, finally, making earth-friendly choices in the products we use in everyday life.

Greenhouse Effect

Gases naturally occurring in the atmosphere allow sunlight to pass through and reach the earth's surface, while at the same time preventing some of the heat from escaping, like th glass of a greenhouse. Carbon dioxide, which is one of these gases, is responsible for approximately 70% of this greenhouse effect, but it has been increasing in the atmosphere over the last two centuries due primarily to man's burning of fossil fuels, and the destruction of our forests. Scientists believe this man-made shift in the gases that surround us is causing"global warming".

Causes

Carbon dioxide (CO2) comes from the burning of fossil fuels: automobiles, turning on lights (the primary method for the generation of electricity is the burning of coal), and emissions from factories are just a few examples. Trees "breathe in" carbon dioxide and "breathe out" oxygen (the opposite of man and the rest of the animal kingdom); therefore when we cut or burn down trees, the scales are further tipped in favor of carbon dioxide. Other contributors to the Greenhouse Effect are:

Chlorofluorocarbons-a group of chemical compounds well known for their negative impact on the ozone layer are used primarily in air conditioning and refrigeration;

Methane-from land fills;

Carbon monoxide, ground-level ozone and other gases round out the list and are the result of pollution caused by motor vehicles, power plants and oil refineries.

Effects

World temperatures rose just one degree in the past 100 years; current models project a further increase of several degrees Fahrenheit within the next 100 years. Global warming is not as simple as the summers being a little longer and the winters less frosty. earlier seasonal melting of the snow-white solar-refecting polar ice caps, caused by these warmer temperatures, drives the thermometer up even higher since less of the sun's energy is reflected (and therefore more is absorbed by the earth) by this huge white area which causes even earlier season melting the next year...

Sea-level would rise and the climate would change along with the disruption of every natural ecosystem that mankind relies upon survival.

Shaklee Environmental Tip

Keep fuel efficiency in mind when you choose your next car. Each gallon of gas burned produces 20 pounds of CO2 which is emitted into the air.

Favorite Things Review... also 10 odd uses for Basic H2

Being environmentally friendly is becoming a priority in many households. This was evident during Oprah's 2007 "Favorite Things" episode, a time usually devoted to pricey electronics and unrealistic purchases, when she spoke about a VERY AFFORDABLE line of "green"cleaning products from Shaklee. For less than $100, your family could replace conventional cleaning products with an environmentally sound, non-toxic line of - get this - effective household items. One product of note, Oprah insisted, is Shaklee's Basic H2. There is more to this concentrate than cleaning kitchens and bathrooms, though. So, grab your new bottle of Basic H2 and your sense of adventure, and try out these interesting techniques. Remember, a 16oz bottle of basic H2 can make 48 GALLONS worth of all-purpose cleaner. How's that for saving money?

Basic H2 as toothpaste: Do you have problems with bad breath or gum disease? Are you a smoker or coffee drinker? Add a drop or two to your toothbrush, right on top of your normal dab of toothpaste. Watch as your teeth become whiter and your gums healthier. Your breath may even stay fresh longer, as Basic H fights germs of all sorts.

Basic H2 as a glove: Cleaning often leaves your hands with something to be desired. Before you get down and dirty, pour a few drops directly onto your hands. Rub them together to coat both hands. After you are done cleaning, wash your hands with traditional soap to find that scum, smell and overall ickiness are nowhere to be found.

Basic H2 as a pesticide: Growing organic produce does wonders for your health and the environment, but pesticide-free can still mean bug-free. Dilute your Basic H2 to a couple of drops per spray-bottle, then spritz your plants as part of your regular routine. Not only will the bugs stay away but you might also find that they are bigger and healthier, as well.

Basic H2 as Miracle-Gro: Add a few drops to warm water, then water your indoor or outdoor plants. The Basic H2 solution will make the ground soluble to the water, thus making your plants much healthier than with regular water.

Basic H2 as a produce wash:
Just 1/8tsp. added to a pint of water will make an effective and safe wash for your produce. Grit and dirt on leafy vegetables are easily removed, and you no longer have to worry about a funny taste remaining on the produce.

Basic H2 for sharpening knives: Once again, only a few drops are enough. Place them on your sharpening stone before you sharpen your knives. The stone will stay moist without clogging.

Basic H2 for stamp collecting: If you've ever tried removing stamps from an envelope, you know that it can be nearly impossible to preserve the quality of the stamp. Not anymore! Coat the inside of the envelope, just behind the stamp, and wait for a few minutes. Soon, the stamp will lift easily from the envelope, ready to be added to your collection.

Basic H2 as a diaper wash: Coupled with 1/2 tsp of Shaklee Basic G (a germicide), 1/4 tsp of Basic H2 can remove germs and odors from your cloth diapers. Leave a bit in your diaper pail to prevent odors there, as well.

Basic H2 as an insect repellent: You don't have to sucept yourself or your family to harsh chemicals and strong scents just to avoid bug bits. Rub a bit anywhere that you would put Off! or Skin-so-soft, and forget about it! This is one insect repellant that you can feel good about using for the youngest to the oldest members of your clan.

Basic H2 as Rain-X: Last (for our list, anyway) but not least, pour 3 1/2 tsp of Basic H2 into one quart of water, and use it as your windshield wash. Rain and slush will easily wipe away from your windshield, and bugs will slide away, as well.

GetClean can save you money.

The Get Clean Starter Kit replaces 830 bottles or boxes of conventional ready-to-use cleaning products you use in your house, kitchen and laundry -over $3400 of equivalent cleaning power. When you purchase the Get Clean Starter Kit instead of ready-to-use products, you're helping reduce over 100 pounds of packaging waste from landfills and eliminating 248 pounds of greenhouse gases - this is the environmental equivalent of planting 10 trees. The environmental protection agency has named Shaklee as a climate leader.

For under $200, you are getting over $3,400 worth of powerful organic cleaners and the like.

If you don't see the savings in this, maybe you need to read that again :-)

The Basic H2 bottle ALONE can make 3,500 bottles of Windex equivalent, but non-toxic Windex...so it is better in my opinion.

Did you know?

1 out of 13 school-age children have asthma.

Asthma rates in children under 5 increased 160% from 1980 to 1994.

There is a direct correlation between the toxins found in common household cleaners and the rates in asthma.

I am doing all that I can to spread the word and want to help these children as well as their families healthier.

Some interesting facts:
-90% of all poison exposures occur in the home.
-218,316 reported poison exposures in 2005 were from household cleaners.
-Indoor Air Pollution is 2 to 5 times higher inside than it is outside
-90% of our time is spent indoors
-81,000 Chemicals have been registered in the last 30 years
-Fewer than 20% have been tested for toxicity.

Please take the time to watch all 3 of these short video's on Safety and Chemicals in our houses..
